Late Goals Defeat Depleated Reserves
Reserves 1-3 Virginia Water - Report by Alistair MacDonald
The Railwaymen had 6 changes to last weeks side and this proved too much
as a Virginia Waters more settled line up took all three points with two
goals in the last 20 minutes at Loop Meadow Stadium.
THe away team had a tame free kick easily saved as early as the ninth
minute. Immediately after Ross MacDonald won a corner for the home team
but it was easily dealt with before MacDonald was brought down outside
the box. MacDonald,s free kick was saved by home keeper Matt Jones.
Didcot continued to pressure but MacDonald was isolated when winning the
ball in the Virginia half and this led to three corners in a row which
were ultimately cleared. Mikel Filipowicz had a shot just dip over the
bar for Didcot. Not long after and the away team took the lead from a
corner when a tangle of bodies met a corner and the ball appeared to
come off a Didcot legs and end up in the net for an OG.
A dangerous VW free kick found no takers in the box before Mateus
Madeiros had a good run which finished with the ball falling to
MacDonald who won another corner. The corner went to Aaron Davies who
swung a tempting cross in to the visitors box but no one could take
advantage. MacDonald turned the away Centre Back and was brought down on
the edge of the box for which the No Five was booked but the free kick
was cleared. The closing chance in the half came when the away team
skewed a good chance wide of goal.
MacDonald continued to win ball up the pitch but again support was slow
to arrive however one such situation resulted in MacDonald finding Aaron
Davies whose swinging shot was just wide. Cailan Isaac came on for the
tiring Michael Alexis to give MacDonald some support for Didcot and not
long after Isaac played the ball back to Jack Kitchener who strode on to
the pass and hammered home a great shot from 30 yards past the flailing
Jones in the Virginia goal.
Not long after and a dangerous away attack was cleared by Wilcox and
Young. MacDonald was again upended on the edge of the box but the free
kick magic was missing today from Didcot and the kick went wide. Not
long after and MacDonald chased a seeming lost cause won the ball wide
in the box and squared to Isaac seemingly with an open goal however the
youngster took a touch and keeper Jones smothered the attempt and Alex
Marshall, s shot was also saved from the follow up.
With 18 minutes left the away team were allowed a cheap shot at goal and
Jake a baker followed up,to hot home the rebound. Despite some good
possession Didcot could not find a way to goal and the away team
capitalised when Josh Hill shot home direct from a free kick to,wrap up
the scoring and the three points.
